Connecting Kids to You

Each year 450+ teens come to campus to take part in a focused, campus-based experience that exposes them to:

  • Cornell University

  • Research in action

  • Career opportunities

We promote this as an excellent opportunity for all of us to engage youth in the work of the university.   For Departments, this may be a time to:

  • Pilot new materials
  • Host a teen focus group for prospective research
  • Train teens to collect data
  • Meet departmental or funding outreach needs

The 4-H Career Explorations Conference is divided into two tracks: University U and Focus for Teens. Students ages 13 and 14 participate in University U, a program designed to expose students to a variety of career opportunities. Each University U participant will take part in six different  1 1/2 hour workshops. The Focus for Teens program allows students ages 15 to 19 the chance to explore one certain career field to a greater degree. These teens spend three days with one department doing research or working on a group project.

Support is available to help you and your staff put together a program that will meet your needs as well as ours.   At the conclusion of the program, we offer $15 per participant in your program to go towards reimbursing your expenses.

April 15 or sooner - deadline for program itinerary

  • Submit your program itinerary for June 30, July 1 and July 2.

April 15   -  registration deadline for teens and chaperones

  • The application process is on-line.  Programs are filled “first come, first served”.  Once a program is filled based on your maximum number, the on-line form shows “closed”.  Note that when teens cancel, counties are given the opportunity to fill the cancellation spot with another participant for the same program.

End of May - list of registrants sent to you

  • After delegates are placed in programs, a list of delegates and their home address labels will be sent to Focus for Teens Coordinators electronically.  Additional information about the applicant is sent via campus mail so that you can get to know your delegates in advance of the program.  Please plan to send a note to delegates with more details about your program. Include pre-program assignments and a list of items that delegates need to bring or wear to be ready for your program.

  • Cancellations will be noted by emails to you. Experience shows that one or two cancellations per program may occur.

  • Program Guides with the overall schedule and each program itinerary will be sent electronically to delegates through the Extension associations and to you early-June.
